News from Chesterton House

This month we're launching something new: episode one of the Family Wealth Podcast. It's a magazine-style show covering family wealth and other financial planning topics, as well as news from our team. In the first episode, Sam and I talk through the pension and inheritance tax changes due next April, and Andy and I visit Equality Action, one of the charities supported by the Chesterton House Foundation.

As this is our first episode, we'd love to hear what you think, so we can shape it into something that you enjoy listening to. Just reply to this email with any comments. We're also planning to invite clients to appear as guests in future episodes, so if that's of interest, do get in touch.

If you're a business owner, our next article explains why it pays to know your 'number' early. It's a calculation that shapes how you approach a sale, sometimes years before it happens.

We also cover some new FCA research on how younger investors think about risk. Nearly a third of 18 to 40 year olds wrongly believe they'd get their money back through the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman if AI investing advice went wrong. It's worth understanding if you're planning to pass wealth down the generations.

And our third article looks at what comes after the financial planning is sorted. Once the numbers work, what really makes for a great life? It's a question we hear a lot from clients who've already done the hard part.

We've also got the latest Team News and an update from the Chesterton House Foundation, including some information about our next fundraising event.

I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. If you have any good stories, recommendations for books, days out or holiday destinations, send them my way for a future issue.

Chesterton House Family Wealth Podcast Episode 1: Why this podcast, pensions and IHT changes, and a visit to Equality Action

We're starting a new season of our podcast, with a new name! The Family Wealth Podcast will be a magazine style show, with segments on topics relating to family wealth, as well as hot topics and news from Chesterton House.

We kick off our first episode with a discussion I had with Financial Planner Sam about the changes to pensions and inheritance tax that are due to come into force next April.

Andy and I also recently visited Equality Action, one of the recipients of a grant from the Chesterton House Foundation. It was great to hear about the work they do, and I hope you enjoy listening too.

You'll also be able to watch or listen through the main podcast providers: Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and Deezer. There are links on the page linked below.

Thinking of selling your business? Here's why it pays to know your number first

Most business owners spend years building something valuable. But how do you know that the value you’re building will deliver what you want?

Over the years we’ve worked with many business owners to develop their plans, and we begin by helping them to work out what is their ‘number’. As your business becomes more successful (and more demanding!) it’s a calculation that becomes more and more important. Doing this work can be invaluable in developing a business strategy that ultimately delivers the life you want. But in our experience, whilst most business owners have some form of plan for their business, their own personal plan takes a back seat.

The safety net your children think they have (and don't)

The FCA recently published new research on how 18 to 40 year olds make investing decisions. One line in it should catch the attention of any family with wealth to pass on: nearly a third of young investors wrongly believe they’d get their money back through the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the Financial Ombudsman if AI investing advice went wrong.

Why a great life is about much more than financial security

Financial security buys you choices. It does not, on its own, buy you a great life.

Many of the people we work with have done the hard part already. They have built a career or a business, raised a family, saved diligently, or sold something they spent years building. The numbers work. And yet when we meet with new clients for the first time, there’s often an underlying question quietly sitting beneath the obvious ones: now what?

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

From the team - awards, fundraising and anniversaries

  • Paraplanner Emma has been shortlisted for the CISI Paraplanner of the Year award. We'll find out if she's won at the awards ceremony on 8th October.!

  • Managing Director Rachel took part in the Great North Run half marathon for the Bodie Hodges Foundation, a charity the Chesterton House Foundation supported with a grant last year. You can read about the grant here, or sponsor Rachel on her fundraising page here.

  • We're also marking a couple of work anniversaries. Sapna, our Head of Technology & Strategic Programmes, has been with us for 12 years, moving from Admin through Paraplanning to become our resident IT expert. And Lacie has just reached her third year with us as part of our Welcome Team. You've likely met her if you've visited our offices.

None of this happens without a team that shows up for each other as much as they do for clients. Thank you, all of you.
